The chance to not only train in the town I grew up in, but also to gain experience serving its diverse patient population, was very appealing to me. Another thing I valued was CMU’s excellent simulation center.

Andrew Namespetra, MD
Medical School: Univ Cork College, Ireland
Professional Career Interests: I have an interest in academic emergency medicine and plan to incorporate teaching, quality improvement, and research into my professional career as an EM Physician. Most importantly, I aim to deliver excellent evidence-based patient-centered care for the entirety of my career.
Why did you choose CMU: The EM residency program has all the aspects that were the highest priority for me: a passionate and engaging faculty, high acuity, high volume, and an inclusive atmosphere. I am from Southwestern Ontario, so it was important for me to stay close to home; Saginaw is a short drive from the Canadian border and my hometown. Dr. Cowling and all the other faculty members strive to build an environment that is conducive to learning through the excellent didactic and simulation program that complements the experience we obtain on the ground floor at the two teaching hospitals, Covenant and Ascension St. Mary’s. It is clear from the professional attitudes and high proficiency of the senior residents that the CMU EM program will ensure I can become a strong EM Physician.
Personal Hobbies/Interests: Competitive swimming, weight-lifting, cycling, tennis, traveling the world, hiking, camping, visiting friends and family at home in Canada
Favorite Things to do around Michigan: Although I am still exploring Michigan, a few highlights include the abundance of fresh water (Michigan is surrounded by the Great Lakes), the Saginaw Valley Rail Trail for cycling and running, Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes, Mackinac Island, visiting Detroit (DIA, the Red Wings, concert venues), and hanging out with my co-residents.
