Since a multidisciplinary approach is necessary to understand the complex issues surrounding the ecology of the Great Lakes, the Institute for Great Lakes Research draws faculty and students from a variety of academic departments for different collaborative research projects.

Track Algal Blooms with NOAA
Biology faculty member Hunter Carrick, his students, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are documenting the seasonal progression of potentially harmful algal blooms that could change a lakes quality, taint drinking water, and potentially be toxic to the ecosystem.
