Challenging Coursework
Your next big challenge starts here

When you choose to study chemistry or biochemistry at CMU, you’re stepping into a program designed to push you further, and support you every step of the way. Whether your sights are set on graduate school, professional programs, or careers in industry, research, or education, you'll be challenged to think critically, solve complex problems, and apply what you learn in real-world settings.
CMU’s chemistry and biochemistry majors are among the most comprehensive and respected in the state. Our programs are approved by the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB)—the gold standards in undergraduate science education. But what really sets us apart? Every chemistry and biochemistry major completes a faculty-mentored capstone research project, a signature experience you won’t find at any other public university in Michigan. You won’t just learn science, you’ll do science.
From day one, you’ll work alongside professors who are not only passionate educators but active researchers in areas like materials science, chemical education, and biochemistry. As you progress through your courses, you’ll have access to advanced instrumentation, modern research labs, and spaces purpose-built to foster discovery, including the Dow Science Complex and the state-of-the-art Biosciences Building.
You’ll build more than just knowledge. You’ll gain experience, confidence, and the mindset of a scientist. And when you graduate, you’ll be prepared to stand out, whether you're applying to competitive graduate programs, heading to medical or pharmacy school, or launching directly into a career with leading companies or government labs.
We know the journey won’t always be easy. But if you’re ready to be challenged, supported, and transformed, this is where you start.
