    If you’re passionate about mathematics and driven to excel, the Sivaram Narayan Mathematics Scholarship was created with students like you in mind. This award celebrates academic achievement, dedication to the field, and the spirit of curiosity that defines great mathematicians.

    Eligible students are mathematics majors with junior standing or higher who have maintained at least a 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Because Dr. Narayan valued opportunity and access for all, preference is given to applicants who demonstrate financial need.

    Established in 2020, this scholarship honors the legacy of Professor Sivaram Narayan, who joined CMU in 1988 after earning his Ph.D. from Purdue University. Over his distinguished career, Dr. Narayan published groundbreaking research in Operator Theory and Matrix Theory, mentored 12 Ph.D. students and more than 75 undergraduates, and secured funding from the National Science Foundation to support student research. His dedication to teaching and discovery earned him numerous awards and left a lasting impact on the CMU community.

This renewable award recognizes junior and senior students who are enrolled full-time in the Secondary Mathematics Education program. Recipients typically maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA, reflecting both academic commitment and a passion for teaching.

    Established in 2010 to honor Samuel J. Brannan, this scholarship celebrates a lifelong dedication to education. Mr. Brannan earned both his Bachelor of Science (1959) and Master of Arts (1962) from Central Michigan University before teaching in the CMU Mathematics Department for 38 years. As a respected educator and proud member of Kappa Mu Epsilon and ROTC, he inspired countless students to see the beauty and power of mathematics.

    For students who dream of sharing their love of mathematics with future generations, the Jennie Master Endowed Scholarship in Mathematics Education offers meaningful support to help make that dream a reality.

    This renewable scholarship is available to students enrolled in the Department of Mathematics, who have a 3.0 GPA or higher and are interested in pursuing a career in mathematics education. Renewal amounts may vary based on available funds.

    Established in 2016 through the estate of Jennie E. Master, this scholarship honors a CMU alumna whose life was dedicated to academic excellence and education. Jennie Master earned her Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Central Michigan University, graduating as valedictorian of the Class of 1943. She was an active member of Kappa Mu Epsilon and Kappa Delta Pi, and later earned her Secondary Teaching Certificate in 1952, continuing a lifelong commitment to teaching and learning.

    For students who see teaching as more than a profession, the Nikoline A. Bye Endowed Scholarship offers recognition and support for your hard work, dedication, and love of mathematics.

    This scholarship is awarded to second-semester juniors or senior Mathematics majors who have been admitted to the Teacher Education program. First preference is given to mathematics majors on the elementary education curriculum, though if no one meets this criterion, consideration will be given to mathematics majors on the secondary curriculum. Recipients typically maintain a 3.6 GPA or higher in their mathematics coursework and have at least one year remaining before graduation.

    Established in 2012 through the estate of Nikoline A. Bye, this endowed scholarship honors a woman who devoted her life to education and to CMU. A proud 1932 graduate of Central Michigan University, Ms. Bye went on to earn her Master of Arts degree from the University of Michigan in 1941. She returned to CMU as an associate professor in the Department of Mathematics, where she taught for 32 years before retiring in 1974.

    The William and Delores Miller Endowed Scholarship recognizes students who have discovered their passion for mathematics and worked hard to achieve success.

    This award is open to mathematics majors who have earned 80 or more credit hours and completed at least two semesters at CMU. Recipients must demonstrate financial need, and preference is given to graduates of Michigan high schools. While strong academic performance is important, this scholarship also celebrates the determination of “late bloomers”, students who may have faced challenges early on but have shown consistent growth, commitment, and excellence in their studies.

    Established in 2005 to honor Professor William Miller and his wife, Delores Miller, this scholarship reflects a lifelong dedication to education and problem-solving. Professor Miller, a Michigan native, taught in CMU’s Department of Mathematics from 1968 to 2000, specializing in mathematics education. Known for his enthusiasm, curiosity, and ability to help students see the beauty in solving complex problems, he left a lasting mark on the department and his students.

    The Cleon C. Richtmeyer Mathematics Scholarship is designed to recognize and encourage students who show a strong commitment to mathematics, whether they’re just beginning their academic journey or continuing to excel in upper-level courses.

    This scholarship is available to mathematics majors at both the underclass and upper-class levels:

    Underclass students should have completed or be enrolled in MTH 132 and have fewer than 26 semester hours of college credit.

    Upper-class students should have completed or be enrolled in MTH 223 and MTH 133 and have at least 30 semester hours of college credit.

    Established through a generous bequest from Dr. Cleon C. Richtmeyer, this scholarship honors an educator and leader who helped shape mathematics at CMU for more than four decades. Dr. Richtmeyer served as Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, Chair of the Department of Mathematics, and a faculty member from 1924 to 1968.

    The amount and number of awards vary each year, based on available funds. Recipients of the upper-class scholarship may renew their award by maintaining a 3.0 GPA overall (3.5 in mathematics) and continuing as mathematics majors. Renewal is not automatic, students must reapply to be considered.

    The Frank and Rita Jozefaciuk and Aunt Irene Rutkowski Endowed Award celebrates hard work, perseverance, and academic excellence.

    This award is open to junior and senior students majoring in mathematics, as well as those studying engineering, computer science, or statistics. Eligible recipients must be Michigan residents and U.S. citizens, have earned at least 56 semester hours of credit, and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.4.

    Established in 2005 as a tribute to Frank and Rita Jozefaciuk and Irene Rutkowski, this endowed award was created by their family to honor the values they cherished most, education, dedication, and opportunity. Their generosity continues to make a difference by helping CMU students achieve their goals in mathematics and related fields.

    Each year, the Department of Mathematics, in partnership with the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid, determines the number, amount, and recipients of this award.

    The Jozefaciuk and Rutkowski Endowed Award carries forward a family legacy of learning and leadership, empowering CMU students to push boundaries, pursue excellence, and make an impact through mathematics and the sciences.

    The Lester H. and Jack D. Serier Endowed Memorial Scholarship honors the lasting impact of a father and son whose legacy continues to inspire excellence in mathematics at CMU.

    This scholarship is awarded to Michigan residents majoring in mathematics who have completed at least 56 credit hours and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Preference is given to students who demonstrate financial need.

    Established in 2001, this endowed scholarship was created in memory of Professor Lester H. Serier and his son, Jack D. Serier. Professor Serier dedicated more than four decades (1939–1980) to CMU’s Department of Mathematics, serving as department chairperson from 1958–1959 and again from 1961–1965. His commitment to education and mentorship shaped generations of students and strengthened the foundation of CMU’s mathematics program.

    The Serier Scholarship continues to celebrate the values that defined Professor Serier’s career, academic excellence, dedication to learning, and the belief that every student deserves the chance to reach their full potential.

    The Richard and Karen St. Andre Endowed Award recognizes students who are building a strong foundation in mathematics and showing early promise in their academic journey.

    This non-renewable award is open to sophomore students who have declared a mathematics major, are Michigan residents, and demonstrate strong potential for success in their field. It’s designed to encourage students who are just beginning to deepen their studies and envision their future in the mathematical sciences.

    Established in 2004, this award honors Dr. Richard St. Andre and Karen St. Andre, whose contributions to CMU and the local community have left a lasting mark. Dr. St. Andre served as a dedicated member of the Department of Mathematics from 1971 to 2008, during which he also held several key leadership positions—including Assistant to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Associate Dean, and Interim Dean of the College of Science and Technology. A Michigan native with a passion for mathematics education, Dr. St. Andre dedicated his career to helping students and faculty alike reach their highest potential. His wife, Karen St. Andre, supported education and community growth through her long career as a local realtor.

    The St. Andre Endowed Award continues their shared legacy of leadership, mentorship, and community, supporting students who are ready to grow, achieve, and make a lasting impact in mathematics.

    The Edward, Bertha, and Stephen Whitmore Endowed Scholarship celebrates academic excellence and a dedication to mathematics education. It is designed for students who have demonstrated exceptional skill and commitment in their studies and are preparing to inspire the next generation of learners.

    Eligible recipients are mathematics majors who have completed at least 86 semester hours, have been admitted to the Teacher Education program, and maintain a 3.6 GPA or higher in their mathematics courses. Students must also have at least one year remaining before graduation.

    This scholarship was established by family and friends to honor the lives and contributions of Dr. Edward Whitmore, Bertha Harper Whitmore, and Stephen Harper Whitmore. Dr. Edward Whitmore served as a mathematics professor at CMU from 1965 until his retirement in 1987, including multiple terms as department chairperson, shaping the department and mentoring generations of students. Bertha Whitmore dedicated her career to educating young minds as a science teacher in Mt. Pleasant Public Schools from 1966 to 1987, while Stephen Whitmore, their son, excelled in corporate finance and securities law as a partner at a prestigious New York law firm.

    The Whitmore Endowed Scholarship continues the family’s legacy of dedication, excellence, and service, supporting students who are poised to make a meaningful impact in mathematics and education.

    The Arnold Hammel Endowed Scholarship celebrates students who are deeply committed to mathematics and to the community of learners around them. This award is open to full-time mathematics majors who are active members of Kappa Mu Epsilon (KME), the undergraduate mathematics honor society, recognizing both academic achievement and involvement in the mathematics community.

    Established in 2006 by the friends and colleagues of Dr. Arnold Hammel, this scholarship honors a dedicated educator and mentor. Dr. Hammel earned his B.S. in Mathematics from CMU in 1962 and joined the Department of Mathematics as an instructor in 1965, eventually becoming an Assistant Professor in 1969. He served as the faculty advisor for KME from 1980 until his retirement in 2006, nurturing generations of students and fostering a culture of excellence and camaraderie in mathematics.
