Physics Graduate Assistantships

As a graduate student, you'll have opportunities to apply for financial assistance through graduate assistantships offered within the CMU Department of Physics as well as the College of Graduate Studies.

In addition to providing financial assistance to help you complete your degree, graduate assistantships offer opportunities to develop and enhance your career-related skills.

Graduate Teaching and Research Assistantships

The CMU Department of Physics has graduate teaching and research assistantships available for students in the M.S. and Ph.D. programs.

Graduate teaching assistantships (GTAs) are service-related appointments that require teaching. GTAs are involved in laboratory instruction for 6 to 8 contact hours per week. Graduate research assistants (GRAs) are expected to work approximately 20 hours per week on a faculty research project. Summer support is possible, but depends on the availability of funds.

Compensation

Through an assistantship, you'll receive:

  • A competitive stipend.
  • 20 credit hours of tuition waiver for the academic year (unused hours may be used in the summer).
  • Tuition scholarship classification as a Michigan resident.

Applications

Assistantships are awarded on a competitive basis.
