Elevate your Learning with the School of Engineering and Technology

At Central Michigan University’s School of Engineering and Technology (SET), you won’t just learn engineering, you’ll live it. From day one, you’ll be immersed in a hands-on education designed to sharpen your critical thinking, leadership, communication, and ethical decision-making skills. These qualities, combined with technical expertise and real-world experience, will make you highly sought after by employers in both industry and academia.

A cutting-edge curriculum aligned with industry needs

All undergraduate programs in the School of Engineering and Technology are ABET-accredited, ensuring you receive an education that meets the highest national engineering standards. A rigorous assessment process, guided by external advisory boards, CMU alumni, faculty, and students, keeps the curriculum aligned with industry trends, integrating comprehensive coursework with practical, hands-on learning.

Two students conduct a wind tunnel experiment in a laboratory. You’ll engage in laboratory work, simulations, and design-based learning that challenge you to develop problem-solving and innovation skills. Specialized courses like Mechatronics, Photonics, and Drone Design and Prototyping integrate concepts from electrical and mechanical engineering, computer science, materials science, and physics, giving you real-world applications for your studies. If environmental engineering interests you, you’ll gain experience measuring pollutants in water and air while analyzing treatment options in the lab. No matter your discipline, SET programs will prepare you for the evolving challenges of modern engineering.

Research, competitions, and global experiences

Three students work on a Formula-style race car in an engineering workshop.Your education at CMU extends beyond the classroom. As an undergraduate, you’ll have opportunities to collaborate with faculty on multidisciplinary research in fields such as artificial intelligence, wireless and optical technologies, sustainable energy, water treatment technologies, and materials characterization.

You can also test your skills in prestigious design competitions like Baja SAE, Formula SAE, and Cast in Steel, where you’ll gain hands-on experience working on high-performance engineering projects. Study abroad opportunities, research projects, and student organizations will further enrich your experience, allowing you to expand your knowledge and global perspective.

Learn from experts, solve real-world challenges

Your professors at CMU aren’t just educators—they’re industry experts and researchers specializing in cutting-edge fields such as robotics, drone design, stormwater management, earthquake engineering, pollution prevention, 3D printing, electromagnetics, and nondestructive evaluation. With small class sizes, you’ll benefit from close mentorship and personalized guidance, ensuring you develop the critical problem-solving skills necessary to tackle real-world engineering challenges.

A senior design project that goes beyond the standard

A student in a light blue jacket works on a robotic vehicle in an engineering lab, adjusting its wiring and components.CMU takes senior capstone design to the next level. CMU’s year-long senior design project offers an in-depth opportunity for you to work with government and industry sponsors on complex engineering challenges. This experience includes research, prototyping, and final product development, ensuring that by the time you graduate, you won’t just be job-ready—you’ll be prepared to lead.

Your future starts here

At CMU’s School of Engineering and Technology, you’ll gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence to make an impact. Whether your future lies in industry, research, or innovation, your journey starts at CMU—where engineering education goes beyond the classroom and into the real world.
