Formula SAE is a student design series organized by SAE International (Society of Automotive Engineers). The concept behind Formula SAE is that a fictional manufacturing company has contracted a design team to develop a miniature style Formula 1 race car. Teams, majorly composed of undergraduate engineering students from many universities, take this challenge of designing, manufacturing, and competing their own Formula SAE race cars on an international level.
Each team's goal is to design and build an open wheel formula style race car. The vehicle is to be a prototype for a reliable, maintainable, ergonomic, and economic production vehicle which serves a recreational user market, sized at approximately 200 units per year. The race car should aspire to market-leading performance in terms of speed, acceleration, handling, durability, and efficiency on road courses. The performance will be measured by the success in the dynamic events described in the Formula SAE Rules and are subject to event-site weather and course conditions.
