Physics facilities and labs
Where Curiosity Becomes Discovery
Physics comes to life when you have the opportunity to experiment, explore, and create. The Department of Physics at CMU provides you with access to specialized laboratories, research facilities, and advanced equipment that allows you to investigate the fundamental principles that shape our world.
Whether studying the cosmos, exploring materials and matter, developing new technologies, or gaining research experience alongside faculty, students use these facilities to build the skills, confidence, and experience needed for their future careers.

Brooks Astronomical Observatory
You will have opportunities to further develop your career skills in our on-campus observatory, which houses a modern 16-inch (40 cm) computer-controlled telescope that is equipped for CCD direct imaging, UBVRI photometry, medium-dispersion spectroscopy, as well as visual observing.
Laboratories
You can diversify your knowledge and career skills through course work and research experiences in the physics- and astronomy-related labs, which are equipped for laser spectroscopy, magnetic resonance, rheology, thin films, polymer fluid dynamics and X-ray diffraction.
