Physics summer research experience 2026

Turn your curiosity into discovery with CMU’s Physics Summer Research Experience.

This competitive, paid opportunity gives driven physics majors the chance to spend their summer exploring real-world scientific questions, not just studying them. Recipients earn up to $4,000 to design and conduct their own research project under the mentorship of a CMU physics faculty member.

If you’ve completed courses through PHY 146 and are ready to apply what you’ve learned in the lab to hands-on research, this program is your next step. It’s designed for students who want to push boundaries, build experience, and prepare for graduate studies or careers in STEM.

Awards are based on academic performance and potential for impactful research, and, depending on available funding, more than one student may be selected.

Spend your summer discovering what’s possible, and take the first step toward shaping the future of physics.
