Ready to take the next step in your graduate journey?
Here’s what you need to know to meet the key requirements for admission and funding in the Department of Statistics, Actuarial, and Data Sciences at CMU.
TOEFL and IELTS requirements
If English isn’t your first language and you’re from a country that requires language testing, you’ll need to submit a satisfactory TOEFL or IELTS score. For regular admission, aim for a TOEFL score of 79 or an IELTS score of 6.5. If your scores fall between 61-78 (TOEFL) or 5.5-6.0 (IELTS), you may still be considered for admission with some additional conditions. To send your official TOEFL or IELTS scores, request them to be sent to Central Michigan University using code #1106.
GRE requirements
If you’re applying for the PhD program or seeking financial support in the MS program, you’ll need to submit your GRE scores. There’s no minimum score required, but your quantitative section scores will carry significant weight in the review process. Be sure to have your official GRE scores sent to CMU with code #1106.
Letters of recommendation
Applying for financial support? You’ll need three strong letters of recommendation. During your online application, you’ll provide your references’ names, affiliations, and emails. Be sure to indicate that you’re applying for a Graduate Assistantship (GA) in the department—this step is crucial. Without it, you won’t be able to request recommendation letters through the system, and your application won’t be considered for assistantship opportunities. Remind your references to upload their letters directly through the online system.
Financial support opportunities
Our department offers several types of assistantships to help fund your studies. To learn more about these opportunities, visit the STAD Graduate Assistantship Page. Beyond department support, CMU provides a variety of financial aid programs for graduate students, explore your options on the Office of Graduate Studies Tuition & Awards page.
