Post a Student Employment Job
Career Central for Student Employment
Career Central is CMU’s online platform for creating student employment job postings and reviewing applications in one place. Departments use Career Central to share open positions, collect applicant materials and manage the review process. Hiring and onboarding continue through Student Employment Services and the standard Personnel Transaction workflow.
This page provides supervisors with the information needed to set up a department employer account, understand how individual supervisor logins connect to that account, create and manage job postings and review applicants. Training materials, recorded demonstrations, and downloadable guides are also available for reference.
Departments use one shared employer account in Career Central, and each supervisor creates an individual login that links to the approved department profile. If you are unsure whether your department account already exists or what employer name to use, the account setup section below outlines the required naming format and how to confirm your department’s information. Student Employment Services manages the student employment portion of Career Central and is the primary contact for assistance.
Account setup and supervisor guidance
One person in each department should create the main employer account in Career Central. All other supervisors then create their own individual logins and connect to that department profile. Departments must be approved by Student Employment Services before posting their first job, and approval may take up to two business days.
When creating the employer account, the employer's name must begin with “Central Michigan University,” followed by the department or unit name. This naming format ensures students can clearly recognize the job as an on-campus position rather than an external company. Departments must coordinate this naming choice in advance to avoid duplicate or incorrect profiles.
After the department account has been approved, supervisors can begin using Career Central to create and manage student employment postings.
Post a Student Employment job
Once your login is linked to the approved department employer account, you can create postings directly from your Career Central dashboard. Supervisors must select the post a Student Employment job button, as the post a job button is intended for external employers and does not route postings to CMU’s student employment system. Posting a job includes entering position details, wages, schedules and locations, uploading any required documents such as resumes or custom screening questions, setting application dates and submitting the posting.
All job postings continue to be reviewed and approved by Student Employment Services to ensure posting requirements are met. Approved postings will go live on the start date you enter and will be removed automatically at the end date. Supervisors may return to their dashboard at any time to review applicants, view submitted materials or update the posting.
Important posting requirements
When creating a posting, type of job must be set to GSA and or Work Study, and industry and job function must be set to Student Employment. Application method must be set to apply via this site only, so all applicants apply through Career Central. These fields must be entered correctly for ses to approve the posting. Supervisors may add prescreen questions by uploading a document containing the questions applicants are required to answer.

Frequently Asked Questions
These FAQs address the most common questions supervisors have when using Career Central. If you need help with something not listed here, contact Student Employment Services directly for assistance.
Who should create the department employer account?
Each department needs one employer account created at the start. This should be set up by the department lead or the person responsible for overseeing student hiring. Some departments may choose to use their general department email for this, others may use the manager’s email, but the key is that the employer account is created once and represents the entire department.
What if I don't see the option to "post a student employment job"?
If you do not see the “Post a Student Employment Job” option in your Career Central dashboard, your account may not yet be fully approved for student employment access. Only approved department accounts are able to view and use the student employment posting features.
Please contact Student Employment Services at ses@cmich.edu so our team can review your account settings. We may need to grant access on the admin side to activate the Student Employment module for your department. Once access is approved, the posting option will appear automatically in your dashboard.
The wrong employer name was selected during account setup.
Before making any changes, contact Student Employment Services to let us know the incorrect employer name was selected. After SES is notified, you can update it in your account:
Log in to Career Central
Go to your account settings
Open your account information
Select Not Your Company
Enter the correct employer name to reconnect to your department
If the update does not go through or your account does not relink correctly, SES can assist with the correction.
How can I require applicants to answer specific questions?
The easiest way to include custom screening questions is to create a Word document listing all the questions you want applicants to answer. Upload this file to your job posting and mark it as a required document for applicants to complete and upload with their application.
Does Career Central complete the hiring process?
No. Career Central is used only to post jobs and review applications. The hiring process itself does not change. Departments will continue to follow the standard student employment steps, including submitting personnel transactions and having students complete their I-9 and tax paperwork through Student Employment Services.
