2022 gets busy
January is the start of a new term. Students come back to campus after the winter break. Winter coats and gloves come with them. For those coming to CMU in the fall, January begins with two huge steps forward along your path to becoming a CMU Chippewa.
Orientation registration opens, and you can begin your housing application.
January is also when we join together to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. As you join our community of learners, you’ll see the wisdom behind one of his famous quotes:
“People fail to get along because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don’t know each other; they don’t know each other because they have not communicated with each other.”
Our orientation program and the requirement that freshmen and sophomores live on campus are two of the many ways that we open those lines of communication between all our students. I encourage you to get to know everyone you can during your time here.
Everyone has a story. The best way to enrich yours is to include the stories of others.
Why is January so important?
Your class schedule and where you’ll live this fall are probably the two top things on your mind. Now you can take action. Sign-ups for your orientation date and the housing application are both open now to students who have submitted or deferred
their $175 Enrollment Reservation Deposit. If you haven’t done this yet, you can submit or defer your deposit by going to your portal and signing in with the credentials you used to apply to CMU.
Submitting or deferring your deposit lets us know you’re coming and secures your spot at CMU. It also opens up your orientation and housing. The deposit is not binding and is fully refundable if you request a refund before May 1.
Why attend orientation?
There’s a reason orientation is required for all incoming freshmen and transfer students. This is where you will:
- Work with an advisor to sign up for your classes.
- Tour campus.
- Get all your remaining questions answered.
There are even events especially for your supporters and their questions. Orientation dates are available from April to June and are first come, first served, so pick your date as soon as possible.
Applying for housing
Now that the housing application process is open, if you submitted or deferred your deposit, you should have received our “Residential Community Living Guide” in your CMU email account. If you haven’t submitted or deferred your deposit,
now is the time to do it.
Follow the instructions in the guide. It will take you step by step through the process and give you an overview of all your housing options. If you don’t have a roommate (most students don’t), be sure to try the RoomSync app. You’ll
find the link to download the app in the Roommate Search step of the housing application. You can narrow down your potential roommates by applying lifestyle filters or searching by academic colleges and housing preferences.
So, by choosing an orientation date and starting your housing application, you’re well on your way to having your class schedule and housing sorted.
That’s two huge steps toward starting this fall that you can complete in January!
