Central Michigan University Libraries: Things you may not know
On the surface, Central Michigan University Libraries might seem kind of boring. Nothing could possibly be interesting or secret about a place centered around supporting students in their academic success, right? WRONG! In reality, the library is a treasure trove waiting to be discovered. This blog post will share secrets about the library as a space for studying, socializing, and exhibition.
One fun fact is that more than eight different undergraduate majors are represented in the educational backgrounds of our ten different Library Research and Instruction Services librarians. It’s true! These majors are Chemical Engineering, English, Chinese Language and Literature, Biology, History, European History, Anthropology, and Studio Arts. Our varying educational backgrounds allow librarians to serve your academic needs so well!
In addition to serving as a place to study, the library is also a place to socialize. Don’t believe me? Just look at our collection of 175 board games! These games can be checked out for 7 days at a time. Since the game collection went live to students in August 2024, our board games have circulated roughly 131 times. Of those games, the game Ticket to Ride is the most circulated. Puzzles, board games, and coloring books can also be found in our De-Stress zone on the second floor. If you want to just hang out with friends in the library, either option could be just what you need!
CMU Libraries also highlights local artists and regional history. The Clarke Historical Library’s exhibition space is one of these areas where you will find cool displays. The current Clarke exhibit is about the history of the Aladdin Company of Bay City. Made up entirely of materials available through the Clarke Historical Library, the Aladdin Company exhibition highlights a notable early house-kit manufacturer that offered customers the ability to order materials and build their own homes. This collection is notable because it highlights both the Clarke Historical Library’s holdings and a part of Michigan’s history.
As you can see, there are many interesting facts about the library beyond what appears on the surface. If you want to learn more about our unique resources, feel free to drop by and look around!
