Embracing AI at CMU
Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming every field, from healthcare and business to education and the arts. Through the Go Grant Initiative, CMU is taking a proactive, thoughtful approach to ensure our community is equipped to lead in this new era. Embracing AI at CMU supports CMU’s mission of integrity and innovation by empowering students, faculty, and staff to use AI ethically, effectively, and confidently. Through a series of strategic actions, we aim to build a comprehensive approach to AI that supports teaching, learning, research, and operational excellence.
A vision for innovation and impact
By embracing AI, we create new opportunities for learning, creativity, and positive change, all grounded in our core values. We envision a campus where AI enhances student learning, supports bold teaching practices, and strengthens CMU’s adaptability to meet future needs.
Supporting CMU’s strategic vision
The Embracing AI at CMU initiative aligns with CMU’s strategic vision:
Inspire student and scholarly success
By integrating AI into the curriculum and campus culture, we equip students with vital skills and knowledge, preparing them to lead in a rapidly changing world.
Ensure institutional sustainability
Investing in AI supports CMU’s commitment to continuous improvement, innovation, and expanding our educational offerings to meet future societal and workforce needs.
Key goals
Develop recommendations for clear policy and guidance
Establish recommendations for university-wide guidance on AI use in courses and develop recommendations for appropriately integrating AI into CMU programs and courses. This will help ensure our graduates are prepared to navigate and lead in AI-rich environments.
Design comprehensive training programs
Create a targeted training plan for students, faculty, and staff focused on ethical, effective AI integration. These learning experiences will empower our community to make informed, responsible choices when using AI.
Strengthen AI infrastructure
Assess and recommend the necessary technological infrastructure, including a pilot program, to support advanced, secure, and equitable AI use across campus. A pilot program will ensure proposed systems meet the needs of our diverse community.
How we’re making it happen
- Kickoff and inspiration - On September 5th, we will bring together campus experts and community voices to explore best practices and challenges with the assistance of nationally known expert, Wes Fondren.
- Collaborative workgroups - Three focused workgroups will be formed to address the key goals above. These groups will develop actionable recommendations by January 2026.
- Campus-wide input and alignment - Workgroups and a Steering Committee will engage stakeholders through meetings, feedback sessions, and forums to ensure shared understanding and campus alignment.
- Pilot and continuous improvement - Focus groups and evaluations will be conducted throughout the academic year to refine and scale successful approaches.
