Maintaining J-1 Status
To remain in compliance with U.S. immigration regulations and retain J-1 benefits, exchange visitors must:
- Complete mandatory check-in requirements.
- Keep your DS-2019 valid and request extensions as needed through your program sponsor.
- Maintain a valid passport (at least 6 months into the future).
- Work only as authorized and listed on the DS-2019.
- Submit timely transfer or extension requests through your sponsoring agency.
- Maintain required health insurance coverage that meets federal standards.
- Update your U.S. address within 10 days of any move.
Failure to maintain your J-1 status can result in loss of immigration benefits.
Health insurance requirement
Federal law requires all J-1 Exchange Visitors and their dependents to maintain valid health insurance for the entire duration of their program. While CMU is not obligated to pay for this coverage, it must ensure all participants are properly insured.
Minimum coverage requirements
- $100,000 in medical benefits per accident or illness.
- $50,000 for medical evacuation to home country.
- $25,000 for repatriation of remains.
- Deductible no higher than $500 per accident or illness.
Before arrival
Departments must confirm that incoming scholars have purchased compliant insurance. Proof of coverage is required upon arrival and must be submitted to International Student and Scholar Services in Ronan 330.
Insurance options
CMU partners with GeoBlue, which offers plans that meet all federal requirements set by the Department of State. Scholars may purchase this coverage independently through the GeoBlue membership portal.
Important: CMU employee insurance does not meet J-1 program requirements. If used, you must purchase supplemental coverage for medical evacuation and repatriation.
Enrollment requirements
At Central Michigan University, J-1 Exchange Visitor students must maintain full-time enrollment to remain in compliance with U.S. Department of State regulations. These requirements ensure that students are making satisfactory academic progress toward their degree objectives.
The full-time enrollment requirements are as follows:
- Undergraduate students: Minimum of 12 credit hours per semester.
- Graduate students: Minimum of 9 credit hours per semester.
- Online course limit: A maximum of 1 online course (up to 3 credit hours) may count toward the full-time enrollment requirement per semester.
- The remaining credits must be completed through in-person or hybrid courses that require physical presence on campus.
These enrollment guidelines are designed to ensure that J-1 students are actively participating in on-campus learning as part of their exchange visitor experience.
