Online Safety Training
Online safety training is available through SAP SuccessFactors.

Safety training instructions
STEP 1: Complete the Safety Training Form and save it to your files
- This form is required for all new lab workers, lab workers moving to a different lab, lab workers working with a different supervisor, or those who do not have one on file with OLFS.
STEP 2: If you have never completed training in SAP SuccessFactors before, complete the following:
- Go to SuccessFactors LMS Access Request
- Click on "Request Access" and sign in with your CMU global ID/password if prompted
- Field 1- Requesting access for "Myself"
- Field 2- Requesting access to training from the "Office of Laboratory and Field Safety"
- Field 3- Select "Lab Worker"
- Field 4- Optional but helpful to provide details about which lab the training is for and why it is needed
- Field 5- Attach the safety training form completed in step one
- Click on "Submit" at the bottom of the form
- Access requests and account activation typically take 24-48 hours to process.
- Once your account is active and your training courses are assigned, you will receive an email from SuccessFactors. There will be a login button in this email to launch the training (SuccessFactors). Click on the log-in and sign in with your CMU global ID/password.
ALT. STEP 2: If you have completed training in SAP SuccessFactors before, review and complete the following:
- Your account may still be active if you have completed training before.
- Email the safety training form completed in step one to the Office of Laboratory and Field Safety
- OLFS will confirm the status of your account, assign training courses, and notify you via email of any other additional information you may need.
- Active users can access SAP SuccessFactors anytime by signing in with their CMU global ID/password.
- Click on "View My Learning" to access your learning dashboard.
Please note: Supervisors shall also provide a safety orientation to new lab workers that is specific to their lab and its operations before the worker is granted unescorted access to or assigned work activities in the lab. The lab-specific safety training form must be completed to document these on-site lab orientations. Supervisors shall keep a copy of this form for each active worker – the form must be available upon request.
Training courses offered in SAP SuccessFactors
Aerosol Transmissible Disease Training
Advised for individuals who use aerosolizing procedures in their work with biological hazards.
Frequency: Annually
Biosafety Awareness Training
Required for individuals who work in a BSL2 environment, but who do not work with BSL2 agents.
Frequency: Every 5 years
Bloodborne Pathogens Training
Required for individuals with exposure to sharps, blood, and other potentially infectious material. Meets the training requirements of MIOSHA Part 554.
Frequency: Annually
Chemical Spill Response and Cleanup Training
Required for individuals with responsibility for cleaning up incidental chemical spills.
Frequency: Every 5 years
Compressed Gas Cylinder Safety Training
Required for individuals who label, store, handle, transport, or change out regulators on compressed gas cylinders.
Frequency: Every 5 years
Flame Resistant Glove Training
Required for all individuals who wear flame-resistant gloves.
Frequency: Every 5 years
Flame Resistant Lab Coat Training
Required for individuals who wear flame-resistant lab coats.
Frequency: Every 5 years
Formaldehyde Safety
Required for individuals who work with formaldehyde. Meets the training requirements of MIOSHA Part 306.
Frequency: Annually
Hazard Communication/Global Harmonized System
Required for non-laboratory workers who work with chemicals. Meets the Training requirements of MIOSHA Part 430.
Frequency: Annually
Lab Safety Training
Required for individuals who work with hazardous chemicals in a laboratory setting. Meets the training requirements of MIOSHA Part 431.
Frequency: Annually
Laser Safety Training
Required for individuals who operate Class 3B or 4 lasers.
Frequency: Every 2 Years
Liquid Nitrogen Safety Training
Required for individuals who use liquid nitrogen.
Frequency: Every 5 Years
Radiation Awareness Training
Required for individuals who do not work with radioisotopes, but who work near radioisotope use and need to be aware of the potential hazards.
Frequency: Every 5 years
Radiation Safety Refresher Training
Required for individuals who work with radioisotopes.
Frequency: Annually
Radiation Safety Training-Bone Densitometer
Required for individuals who operate the DXA bone densitometer.
Frequency: Annually
Radiation Safety Training-XRD
Required for individuals who operate X-Ray Diffraction equipment.
Frequency: Annually
Radiation Safety Training – pXRF
Required for individuals who operate portable X-Ray Fluorescence equipment.
Frequency: Every 5 years
Radiation Worker Training
Required for individuals who work with radioisotopes.
Initial training then "Radiation Safety Refresher Training" annually.
Respiratory Protection Training
Required for individuals who wear a respirator.
Frequency: Annually
Respiratory Protection - PAPR Training
Required for individuals who wear a Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR).
Initial classroom training then "Respiratory Protection - PAPR Refresher Training" annually.
Respiratory Protection - PAPR Refresher Training
Required for individuals who wear a Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR).
Frequency: Annually
Respirator Training-Voluntary Use
Required for individuals who wear a respirator but are not required to.
Frequency: Every 5 years
Shop Safety Training
Required for individuals who work in shops.
Frequency: Every 5 years
Waste Anesthetic Gas (WAG) Safety Training
Advised for individuals who work with isoflurane.
