What is Blackboard

Blackboard Learn TM is the web-based course management system developed by Blackboard, Inc. and in use at Central Michigan University. Blackboard, Inc. is headquartered in Washington, D.C., with offices in North America, Europe, Australia and Asia. As of July 2012, Blackboard had a total of 12,700 licenses for their software applications, which are widely used among higher education institutions, K-12 schools, and corporate and government markets worldwide.

Blackboard offers a course website (shell) for every course* offered at CMU. By default these course shells are equipped with tools for material distribution, assignment management, assessment, synchronous and asynchronous communication as well as feedback, and grading. The system is updated four times per day with course enrollment data from SAP, keeping course rosters and instructor course assignments current.

Blackboard, Inc. welcomes suggestions for improving their product. If you have an idea for a new feature or an enhancement to an existing feature, please submit an enhancement request to the CMU's OIT Help Desk.

*NOTE: Use of Blackboard, except in the case of CMU Online courses, is optional. By default, all courses are created as "unavailable" to students. Only those shells made "available" by the course instructor can be accessed by enrolled students.
