College certificates explained

A college certificate is a cost and time efficient way to specialize in a skill or bring your current skillset up to date. If you're currently in college or working professionally, adding a certificate can help you stand out in your field.

What is an undergraduate certificate?

An undergraduate certificate is a short, structured academic program that teaches specific skills for a particular field or job. Most programs are about four to six classes and take about a year to complete.

CMU offers over 30 undergraduate certificates in everything from healthcare to business to communication. Find your program and apply!

A diploma versus a certificate

A college certificate and a diploma are both education credentials. They signify to employers that you've completed the necessary education and training to perform a job.

There are three main differences between a diploma and a certificate:

  1. Outcomes: A diploma typically covers a broad set of academic topics, offering a well-rounded education. Many career fields require a four-year degree (or more), depending on the role. A college certificate usually connects to a more specific job skill. Certificates are a great way to stay relevant in a rapidly changing field or boost your resume
  2. Time Commitment: Depending on your program, diplomas typically take between four and six years to complete. In contrast, college certificates usually take a few months to a year to complete.
  3. Cost: College certificates are generally more budget-friendly due to the reduced course load and shorter program duration.

If you’re currently completing a degree, adding a college certificate to your four-year program can help you stand out to employers. Depending on your school, you may even be able to 'double count' some credits to both credentials.

If you’ve already completed a degree, you can also return to school to earn a certificate. College certificates are a great way to advance your skills or keep pace with changes in the field. It also shows employers you’re motivated to improve.

A certificate versus certification

While they sound alike, college certificates and professional certifications are not the same.

  • College certificates are academic credentials issued by accredited institutions. They focus on developing knowledge and skills in a specific area.
  • Certifications are industry-recognized credentials awarded after passing an exam, often requiring previous experience or training. National organizations typically give these exams to meet specific industry standards.

Be sure to carefully review the requirements for your career goals. Knowing the difference between a certificate versus a certification, can ensure you're earning the right credentials for your goals.

A certificate versus a license

Another popular type of credential is a license.

  • A college certificate focuses on specializing in a certain area through academic coursework. Individual academic institutions award certificates after you meet their specific requirements.
  • Licenses are credentials which legally allow someone to practice a specific profession like nursing, teaching or real estate. A state or government agency typically issues a license. To earn a license, individuals typically need to pass an exam or participate in continued education.

A college certificate will not qualify you for a licensed role on it's own, but it can be a great place to start.

Why earn a college certificate?

College certificates help you gain specialized skills and stand out to employers. Earning a certificate can help you:

  • tay up to date on the latest trends and technology in your field.
  • Develop personally and professionally.
  • Prepare for a role shift or promotion.
  • Stay competitive in the jobmarket.

At the bottom line, college certificates help you focus on job-ready skills on a shorter, efficient timeline.
