University Libraries video collection

CMU Libraries video collection on the shelf. These videos are arranged in rows on shelves and are Dvds. In the top right corner it says

Did you know the Library has films in its collections? The Library purchases audio-visual materials in direct support of curricular needs across all disciplines taught at the University. We purchase most titles requested by faculty if needed for classes. We also purchase materials that contribute to the broader study of media, including critically acclaimed titles, award winners, and films from specific filmmakers.

The titles we own span the history of moviemaking. We also own some popular television series on DVD. Faculty and staff can check DVDs out for 7 days, and students can check out DVDs for 3 days. Find films by title or topic in Smart Search.

Over the past decade or so, finding DVD players in classrooms has become more challenging. Laptops generally lack CD-ROM/DVD drives now, and many individuals may not own their own DVD players. The Library does have some DVD players in the Library for use if needed.

However, when it comes to teaching, instructors now generally prefer streaming films to DVDs. To that end, the Library licenses streaming videos from several different vendors, including: Kanopy, Films on Demand, Naxos, and the BBC. These resources, along with dozens of free streaming video sources, are listed on the Finding Videos Library Guide. One caveat is that we don’t usually stream Hollywood studio films due to the prohibitive costs.

The Library is committed to supporting the use of video in teaching and learning at the University. In addition to our extensive DVD collection, viewing equipment, and streaming films, we offer a number of services to facilitate the use of the Library’s video resources. Stephanie Mathson, the media librarian, is available to consult with faculty and students to help locate video content for classes or research projects, purchase or license new films, help plan screenings, and assist with technical and intellectual property issues such as Public Performance Rights.
