Biography

Dr. Vance joined CMU in November 2011 where he currently serves as Associate Dean, Clinical Education. In this role, he leads the development, implementation and operation of the third- and fourth-year educational program, including its 6-month longitudinal integrated clerkship in primary care. He was instrumental toward efforts that resulted in full LCME accreditation for the College in 2018. A Saginaw native, he attended Alma College and subsequently received his MD degree from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. After completing an Emergency Medicine residency in Grand Rapids, he returned to Saginaw in 2004. He has served as Program Director of the Emergency Medicine residency and Associate Dean, Academic and Clinical Technology. In 2008, he was the founding director for SYNAPSE (Synergy Medical Advanced Practicum and Simulation Environment). Under Dr. Vance’s leadership, SYNAPSE rapidly expanded its learner base and educational opportunities, conducting over 15,000 learner-hours of training annually. In 2016, SYNAPSE was renamed as the Covenant Healthcare Simulation Center at CMU College of Medicine, in recognition of a $1M gift to the center. Dr. Vance is past-chair of the Emergency Medicine subsection of the Society for Simulation in Medicine, and continues to guide the College’s efforts in the use of simulation based education as a member of the simulation steering committee. Dr. Vance enjoys exploring new technologies and their application to medical education. At CMU, utilizing two separate USDA Distance Learning Technologies grants, he has led the development of a robust video network that enables students distributed throughout Michigan to connect virtually. He speaks on the e-learning and its applications nationally, and seeks to foster the creation of innovative, effective educational opportunities for medical students, residents and faculty at CMU. Dr. Vance resides in Saginaw Township with his wife, Sara and their 3 children.
