Browsing Collection at CMU Libraries
“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies . . . The man who never reads lives only one.” – George R.R. Martin, A Dance with Dragons
Reading books is an age-old way to transcend to a different time and place. What better way to experience something new or take a break from your academic readings than to visit the University Libraries’ Browsing Collection. This collection includes New York Times bestsellers, books by high profile authors, and even the most recent trending cookbook.
The library leases these books, and the collection includes many popular fiction authors such as John Grisham, David Baldacci, Nicholas Sparks, Janet Evanovich, and Danielle Steel. We also have many non-fiction publications, biographies, and cookbooks. Library employees select the titles for the collection, looking for popular authors, bestsellers, and trendy and diverse topics or authors. The books are selected several months before they are published so that the vendor knows how many copies of the book to order to fulfill requests from all libraries. Once the book is published and received by the vendor, they are shipped to the library.
Where do I find this collection?
The Browsing Collection is located on the north end of the 2nd floor of Park Library. Some of the books are on display on top of the shelving units, while the remaining books are shelved by the author’s last name. This space on the 2nd floor also provides several options for finding a quiet and comfortable place to begin reading your selections. Once you decide which book you would like to check out, just take it to the nearby Library Services desk adjacent to borrow it.
