CMU Libraries Supports the Needs of Military-Affiliated Students
As the 24th anniversary of 9/11 approaches, we at CMU Libraries want to extend a special thank you to all Central Michigan University students, faculty, and staff who have worked to keep our country safe by serving in the U.S. armed forces. To show how thankful we are for your service, we have planned several programs to serve the needs of CMU’s military- affiliated students.
One resource we want to highlight as part of this initiative is our specialized “Military Experience” collection. This resource consists of 47 books/stories which were all written by United States military veterans. These stories cover conflicts ranging from the American revolution all the way to modern-day wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Our hope is that military-affiliated students at CMU will feel represented by the vast array of works in this collection.
CMU Libraries also seeks to support military-affiliated students on campus through offering specialized library tours/orientations from September 8 to September 11. These tours are specifically for student veterans, members of the CMU ROTC program, family members of veterans or active-duty military personnel, and anyone who supports CMU’s military-affiliated students. During these tours, attendees will have the opportunity to explore CMU Libraries as a physical space, learn about the academic support resources available through it, visit the library's website, and build community between military-affiliated students.
Through these efforts, CMU Libraries hopes to support military-affiliated students by making the library a more welcoming and easier to use place for them. In addition to showing our ongoing work to support these students, it also displays the growing relationship that has developed between CMU Libraries and the Veterans’ Resource Center. As stated by Shane Taylor, Director of the Veterans’ Resource Center, “the collaboration between the Veterans’ Resource Center and CMU Libraries plays an important role for our military-affiliated students and is one of the many reasons why CMU ranks amongst the top universities by Military Times and the State of Michigan.”
