Fine Arts, Friendly Views, and Focus: Unique Study Spaces in CMU Libraries

Here at CMU Libraries, we aim to be a research resource and a welcoming space. With those goals in mind, the CMU Libraries has many spaces where students can study and feel safe.  This blog post highlights three areas that allow patrons to enjoy CMU Libraries’ art collection, take in scenic views of campus, or sequester themselves to focus. 

Space 1: Baber Room Art Gallery  

In terms of spaces where you can both study and immerse yourself in art, within CMU Libraries, few rival the Baber Room Art Gallery. According to The Impact of Viewing Art on Well-Being, an article by Trupp et. al, viewing art is either actively or passively connected to greater eudemonic well-being (also known as having greater meaning in their lives).  It is not uncommon to see students or faculty with books or laptops diving into research or completing their homework assignments. Whether you’re chasing deadlines or chasing inspiration, we hope that being around artwork in the library while you study helps you relax and find a greater sense of inner peace. 

Space 2: Fourth Floor Space Overlooking the South Side of Campus 

The Park Library also has spaces with great views! According to The Economic Times article titled Psychology Says Adults Who Keep One Chair by The Window Aren’t Doing Nothing, "...brief moments of quiet contemplation may be helpful in refocusing tired brains after long spells of intense focus and pressure." My personal favorite spot for quiet contemplation can be found on the Park Library's fourth floor next to the circular window above the south entrance of the library. Overlooking the tree studded pathway leading all the way to the Student Activity Center, this space serves as a perfect spot to be productive by balancing intense study with silent contemplation.  

Space 3: Individual Study Cubicles in One North

The third type of study space provides a stronger sense of isolation when you are truly ready to focus on the task at hand! These are the study cubicles located in the One North study room. Almost completely surrounded by soundproofing material and located in an already quiet study space, these cubicles can serve as the perfect space to focus intently and get a task done quickly!
