The CMU Libraries and Sustainability
As the impacts of a changing climate, growing income disparity, and social inequality manifest themselves more acutely in our world, sustainability has become a foundational concern for many organizations. Businesses, universities and schools, and libraries are embracing the idea of sustainability. The United Nations defines sustainability as “…development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” It’s about using resources wisely and creating conditions under which both the present and the future are viable.
Sustainability is further defined by three areas of concern, which are frequently described as the Three Pillars of Sustainability:
Environmental – protecting our planet by using natural resources wisely, and by minimizing waste and pollution
Economic – engaging in practices that foster financial viability while at the same time minimizing negative impacts on our natural and societal ecosystems
Social – creating systems that promote equitable opportunities for all members of society and ensure a good quality of life for everyone
The CMU Libraries believes sustainability is important and models sustainable behavior in its operations. It pursues environmental sustainability through its recycling and LED lighting replacement practices; economic sustainability through a centralized supply purchasing program and by purchasing recycled products when possible; social sustainability through its technology checkout offerings and its Textbooks in the Library initiative. Your library is committed to sustainability.
The library is currently pursuing certification through the Sustainable Libraries Initiative. Through this program, public and university libraries pledge to go above and beyond in their sustainability practices, actively seeking opportunities and modeling behaviors and practices others can emulate for the benefit of our world. At present, there are approximately 500 libraries either pursuing certification or that have already achieved it. The CMU library is one of only three university libraries in the state of Michigan in pursuit of this certification.
