Library Laptops: Four Important Things to Know
The loaner laptops that CMU Libraries offers are some of the most popular items that students from all over campus use. Whether you need one temporarily while yours is getting fixed, or you need a specialty program or application for an assignment, the University Library is able to assist you in multiple ways. You will find a selection of MacBooks and Windows computers for checkout at the Library Services Desk, located on the second floor of the Park Library. Checking out a library laptop is easy, but there are a few important things to note when you visit the library to check one out.
First, please remember to bring your student ID with you. CMU Libraries wants you to have the best possible experience in your interactions with the Library Services Desk. Bringing your student ID lets you complete your transaction with ease.
Second, any student worker at the Library Services Desk is happy to assist you in checking out a laptop as long as there is one available. If one is not available, keep checking in with us via phone at (989) 774-3114 or by email at cmulibraries@cmich.edu to see when one becomes available.
Third, the laptops are limited to a 2-week loan period and cannot be renewed or extended under any circumstances. When you return a loaner laptop, a 12-hour block will apply to your library account for laptop loans only. We hope to make loaner laptops available to as many students across campus as possible and therefore the loaner laptops must be returned in a timely manner. You are more than welcome to use any other library resources or materials during this time.
Fourth, additional programs and applications cannot be downloaded to CMU Libraries’ laptops. The laptops already have a variety of programs that students across all majors may need at one time or another. If you are unsure if the library laptops have access to a program that you are looking for, please contact the Library Services Desk. Available programs and applications include:
- Lockdown browser
- Adobe Creative Cloud
- Microsoft Office
- Citrix
- Virtual Lab
- SAP
- R Software
- and much more!
