CMU Libraries Games Collection

Did you know the Park Library has a Games Collection? Did you know it has over 170 games available for checkout right now? Did you know the collection continues to grow and features games from CMU’s very own publishing press? Whether you’re looking for your favorite game, planning a game night with friends, or hoping to try something you’ve never played before, the library Games Collection has plenty to explore.

Looking for something cozy to play this Fall? Try out Agricola. Build your farmstead by sowing fields and raising livestock in 17th-century Europe. Looking for something even cozier? Something you could play as you watch the leaves fall through the 2nd-floor windows of the Park Library? Try out Photosynthesis. Take your trees through their life cycle and compete for sunlight to grow taller.

Maybe you’re looking for something a bit more “epic.” Try out The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game. Guide your fellowship as it embarks on unique adventures in Tolkien’s Middle-earth! Looking for something that’s both epic and cozy? Try out Root and play as cute woodland creatures battling for control of the vast wilderness.

Not sure where to start? Attend one of the board game events hosted by the CMU Libraries and the Center for Games and Learning through Simulation (CLGS). On Friday, November 6, the CMU Libraries and CLGS will be hosting our International Games Month event. Join us from 3:00-7:00 p.m. in the Park Library Copeland Suite for an evening of gaming. Hosted sessions of select games will be available throughout the event, with volunteers who will help players learn about the game and answer questions. Drop in and out of games at your leisure, no commitment necessary, and try as many games as you can!

Curious how games are made and tested? Attend a Break Our Games session. Hosted in the Park Library every month, CLGS brings a variety of games currently in development for players to come and test. These events gain so much from player feedback. Did you like this game mechanic? Did five players seem like one too many? How does this rule work again? Join us on Friday, December 4, from 3:00-5:00 p.m. in Park Library 211 for the next Break Our Games event and share your feedback. Your input can help shape these games in development.

Whether you’re new to board games or a seasoned player, the library Games Collection has something for you. Browse the collection online or stop by and see it in person on the 2nd floor of the Park Library, north of the Library Services Desk. Bring some friends, pick a game, and set up at a table nearby for a game or two. Want to keep the gaming going? Games can be checked out for 7 days. So, what are you waiting for? Gaming greatness awaits you at the library!
