Quinton Mitchell

Engineer-in-training

Biography

Quinton Mitchell didn't have to leave campus to gain valuable work experience that will help him land his first job after graduation.

The product design engineering technology major worked with Linda Slater, director of CMU's Plant Engineering and Planning Office on a project to update the sidewalks on campus to match those in downtown Mount Pleasant.

Making them match allows students to remain safe both on campus and as they leave it. Quinton evaluated all the crossings on campus, assessing their signage and striping. He did the same in the city.

Through his work at the Plant Engineering and Planning Office, Quinton gained confidence, leadership experience and an understanding of how to work in a professional environment. He was able to use the skills he learned in his two internships, including one at Ford Motor Co. in Detroit.

"The experience I had, being able to build my own project, delegate its responsibilities and ensure that the work was getting done was as valuable as my internships," he said. "I'm very thankful for this opportunity."

Quinton discovered his passion for engineering and computer-aided design while peering over the shoulder of another student working on a project using the digital design software. He was immediately intrigued by the creativity involved and enrolled in a few engineering classes to explore the program. Quinton is now pursuing his engineering degree.

"If you don't know what you want to do, that's OK," he said. "It's not going to stop you from succeeding."

The future engineer has already applied what he's learned at his internships at Ford Motor Co. and Avalon and Tahoe Manufacturing Inc. He is pursuing his dream of owning a fabrication shop where he can make prototypes and patents.
