FACULTY

Biography

Alan Gumm is a Professor of Music Education at Central Michigan University. His career teaching, conducting, and research has focused on well-rounded “music for all” methods, the success of which is reflected in numerous teaching excellence awards. Highlights of his professional contributions are helping to write the 2014 National Core Arts Standards as a member of the music ensemble subcommittee, and promoting others’ creative works as a member of the Research and Publications Standing Committee for the American Choral Directors Association and Journal of Music Teacher Education editorial review board, and as invited reviewer for multiple journals and book publishers.

Gumm is the author of two comprehensive theories that have been applied internationally in teaching and research. They are summarized in his 2003 book Music Teaching Style and 2020 The Choral Conductor's Companion book chapter “Multifunctional Conducting: A Short Course With a Broad View.” He linked both theories in a 2016 Contemporary Issues for Music Learning Across the Lifespan book chapter and a May 2016 Choral Journal article. Other pedagogical innovations are found in his 2009 Making More Sense of How to Sing book and Choral Journal articles "Speechless Rehearsal" and "Musical and Technical Sources of Choral Dynamics.” Dr. Gumm also edited and contributed a chapter in The Choral Director's Cookbook, was contributing author to The Music Director's Cookbook, and is published in several music education research journals. His website alanjgumm.wordpress.com presents summaries and materials on these and other music education topics.

Gumm previously taught at McPherson College in Kansas, Ithaca College in New York, University of Utah, and K-12 schools in Kansas. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Utah, a Master of Music degree from Fort Hays State University, and a Bachelor of Arts from McPherson College.
