Game and simulation-based learning are growing rapidly as pedagogies within the field of social studies education, yet many social studies teachers primarily use direct instruction as their instructional method. The Game Design and Social Studies undergraduate certificate prepares social studies education majors to develop and implement games and simulations in their classrooms.

Why pursue our game design and social studies certificate?

This innovative certificate allows social studies education majors to learn the principles of game and simulation to develop educational activities that will spark their students’ curiosity and engage them through active learning.

The game design and social studies certificate is designed in collaboration with Dr. Jon Truitt and Dr. Tracy Davis along with the Game Design Thinking Interdisciplinary Council. It is unique and does not exist at other universities in Michigan. This certificate will also include 10 clinical flex hours working with game design and testing games with K-12 students.
