Important Housing Dates

Move-in/move-out

Keep yourself informed of dates and other details about moving in and out of your on-campus residence.

Spring 2026 move-out

The residence halls and Graduate Housing apartments close promptly at 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 9.

Students received an email to their CMICH account on April 7, with detailed information about preparing for spring move-out.

Residence halls close at 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 9. Late checkouts will incur an initial $100 fee and an additional $100 for every hour after.

Step 1: Clean and organize living unit. It should be in move-in condition, as clean and in good repair as when you moved in. All trash and items should be removed from the room. Please refer to the checkout instructions sent via email and posted outside of your living unit door.

Step 2: Each resident MUST check out in person with a Residence Life staff member who will inspect your living space before collecting your room key. Failure to checkout in person will incur an improper checkout fine.

Step 3: During each resident’s final in-person checkout with a staff member, your room will be inspected for damages and extensive cleaning requirements. Photos are taken of all billable damages or cleaning charges. Any damages or excessive cleaning charges will be billed to your student account and will appear on your June statement due July 1. Charges found in common spaces or shared bedrooms will be split amongst all residents unless a resident claims responsibility by emailing their residence hall director by 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 9.

24/7 quiet hours begin Saturday, May 2 at 11:59 p.m. and extends through finals week. We highly recommend that you prepare your room as much as possible prior to 24/7 quiet hours to reduce noise and added stress during finals week. We ask that you, and anyone helping you move out, be considerate of these 24/7 quiet hours and of other residents trying to study or sleep during finals week.

We’re here to help you prepare for a smooth move out process. A staff member will be visiting each living unit during the week of April 19-26 to review move-out expectations and answer any questions you might have. The goal of Move Out Prep Week is to educate residents about the move-out process and prepare you for move-out, so you can focus on wrapping up your classes and final exams. While this week is designed to support your preparation for move-out, it is your responsibility to follow all move-out directions and instructions.

During Move Out Prep Week, you are encouraged to prepare for semester closing by:

  • Returning your university bed to the fourth slot/pin from the bottom, leaving three open slots/pins. Photos of correct bed placement will be in building lobbies.
    • If you have a Bedloft, we encourage you to disassemble the loft prior to quiet hours beginning on May 2. Leave the loft pieces on your bed, add a tag with your name, student ID number and room number, and reassemble your university bed to the fourth slot/pin from the bottom, leaving three open slots/pins.
  • Review the closing check-out instructions attached to your exterior residence hall door and ask staff questions.
  • Beginning to remove things from walls, being careful as you take down items. At check-out, all items must be taken off all walls and doors, and free of sticky residue.
  • Cleaning and organizing your living areas, including the bathroom. Toilets and showers should be scrubbed and clean at move-out.
  • Discuss your move-out plans with your roommates and complete the roommate exit agreement.
  • Preparing to donate non-perishable food items, extra school supplies, or gently used clothing to the end of year donation drive in your lobby April 20 through May 9.
  • Update mailing addresses for reoccurring shipments and online orders to your home address. Packages received after closing are returned to sender.

Bedloft Rental: Prior to move-out, you will need to disassemble the loft, leave the loft pieces on your bed, add a tag with your name, student ID number and room number. Reassemble your university bed to the fourth slot/pin from the bottom, leaving three open slots/pins. Our team will retrieve the loft pieces from your room after all students have moved out. Any loft not disassembled will incur a $50 improper return fee. If you ordered a shelf with the loft, remember to leave it on the mattress in your room. If your address has changed since you have placed your order, be sure to log into your Bedloft account and update the information at Bedloft.com.

Combination Unit (microwave/refrigerator) Rental: Before leaving, please clean the compact appliance according to the standards outlined in our Cleaning Instructions or the video linked below. After you move out, our team will remove the appliance from your room and document its condition for cleanliness. If you choose not to clean your unit, you will forfeit the cleaning deposit. Also, when retrieving the appliance, if we find that the unit has not been cleaned and/or contains any food items, you will be subject to an additional $50 improper return fee or even possibly a replacement fee of $400.00. If you paid a deposit at the time of order and the standards outlined in Bedloft instructions are met, then you will receive your cleaning deposit within 4–6 weeks via check, mailed to the home address listed on your account. If your address has changed since you have placed your order, be sure to log into your Bedloft account and update the information at Bedloft.com.

Damage charges will appear on your June statement, due July 1. Any appeals to damages must be from the student and submitted in writing to your residence hall director by Wednesday, June 10. No appeals will be accepted after June 10.
