AI Advisory Board

The AI Advisory Board (AIAB) is established to provide coordinated, institution-wide oversight of artificial intelligence use at Central Michigan University. The AIAB is charged with implementing the recommendations of the Embracing AI initiative and Go Grant, ensuring that use and implementation of AI advances CMU’s mission, supports student success, and adheres to ethical, legal, and policy expectations.

Scope of responsibility

The AIAB provides oversight for AI use across academic, research, and administrative domains, with particular focus on:

  • Teaching, learning, assessment, and academic integrity
  • Use of AI in research, including compliance and data stewardship
  • Administrative and operational AI applications
  • Secure AI infrastructure and institutional tools
  • Ethics, equity, accessibility, privacy, and transparency

Key duties

  • Develop and maintain a three-year institutional AI roadmap.
  • Approve AI governance standards and usage frameworks.
  • Ensure alignment with CMU policies and regulatory obligations.
  • Establish escalation paths for high-risk AI uses.
  • Coordinate communication and guidance through a unified AI Hub website.
  • Solicit input from the university community around the positive and negative aspects of AI.
