Competency Testing

Math Competency Exam

Students seeking to satisfy the Mathematics Requirement by successfully completing the Mathematics Competency Examination must pass the exam by the time they have completed 56 hours of academic credit at CMU. Students who transfer more than 36 credit hours to CMU may take the competency examination only during their first semester at CMU.

To schedule an appointment for the Math Competency Exam, call the testing center at (989) 774-1092 or use the online scheduler. The cost is $30 each time (payable via cash, check, debit, or credit card).  This fee cannot be billed to your student account. The test may be taken a maximum of three times.

Oral English Competency


Written English Competency

Students may meet this competency requirement by successfully completing the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) for College Composition examination or by an Advanced Placement (AP) Examination designated as meeting the Freshman Composition requirement.  This must be completed by the end of their first semester at CMU. To register for this CLEP exam, follow the directions on the CLEP page.
