How to get what you need with Documents on Demand
What is Documents on Demand?
Documents on Demand, often referred to as DoD, is a service for current CMU students, faculty, and staff. It allows you to easily request materials from the CMU Libraries and/or other libraries around the world!
What can you request?
You can request books, articles, book chapters, theses, dissertations, music, movies, audiobooks, and more.
When should you use it?
- A book you need is checked out.
- An article for your paper is behind a paywall.
- CMU Libraries does not own the item you need.
- You only need a digital scan of an article or book chapter.
- You live outside of the 48858 or 48859 zip code and want a book shipped to you.
- You want to borrow a movie, audiobook, or other physical items from another library.
How do you make a request?
The easiest way is to use the “Get this for me” link in Smart Search when you find an item you want.

You can also sign in to your Documents on Demand account with your CMU Global ID and password to place requests for items not found in Smart Search.

Please note that if it is your first time requesting materials, you will be prompted to create an account before you can create requests. Please only use your cmich.edu email address.

How long does it take?
The majority of electronic requests, such as articles and book chapters, arrive within 24–48 hours. Many article requests are filled within less than 24 hours. Physical items such as books or DVDs, usually take 7–10 business days. We encourage you to plan if working on a deadline.
How do I retrieve my materials?
For PDFs of articles and scans, you will receive an email in your cmich.edu account to let you know when your item is ready to download from your On Demand (ILLiad) account. You can view those items in your “Electronically Received Articles” folder.

For physical materials, you will receive an email in your cmich.edu account letting you know your item has arrived and is available for pick-up or that it is being shipped to your home address. Shipping is only available for patrons who live outside of the 48858 and 48859 zip codes. Return postage costs are only associated for patrons who live outside of the U.S. There are no additional costs to using our services.
