Affirmative Action Statements

The University’s affirmative action statements and general guidelines for their use follow.

The University’s official statement is:
"CMU, an AA/EO institution, strongly and actively strives to increase diversity and provide equal opportunity within its community.  CMU does not discriminate against persons based on age, color, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender expression, gender identity, genetic information, height, marital status, national origin, political persuasion, pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions, race, religion, sex, sex-based stereotypes, sexual orientation, transgender status, veteran status, or weight (see http://www.cmich.edu/ocrie)."

This statement is required on all advertisements for faculty and staff positions and on publications, advertisements and other communications promoting the university.

The following statement is encouraged in large display advertisements, such as announcing faculty and staff job openings (an example would be advertisements in the Chronicle of Higher Education announcing multiple positions):

CMU is an AA/EO institution, providing equal opportunity to all persons, including minorities, females, veterans, and individuals with disabilities. (see http://www.cmich.edu/ocrie)”

The Office of Civil Rights and Institutional Equity is charged with monitoring and approving the use of appropriate statements on all job-related advertisements.  The University Communications Office, in consultation with the Office of Civil Rights and Institutional Equity, monitors the use of appropriate statements on non-job-related advertisements, publications, and other communications.
