First Gen Central

Being the first in your family to go to college doesn't mean you're alone. We're here to help.

What is a First Generation college student?

There are many different ways to define what and who First Generation College Students are. At Central Michigan University, we use the definition that the federal government uses the definition that is in-line with the United States Department of Education. More specifically, a student is considered First-Generation if the educational level of both parents as reported on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as never attended college.

In other words, if you have parents that did not seek an education beyond a high-school diploma, your exposure to or knowledge of the university experience in general is limited.

What is First Gen Central?

First Gen Central is a hub for all things at CMU that are set up to help facilitate the successful transition into and journey through your college experience at CMU.

While all new students have to navigate college as a new experience, First Gen students can have a limited frame of reference about higher education and the systems that are a part of it. We are here to help provide insight and support with navigating college. From financial aid and academic advising, to residence life and getting involved, it is our hope that this initiative will help you be more successful!
