Research: Does Team Building Work?
The effectiveness of team-building interventions in organizational performance and employee dynamics has been a subject of considerable research in organizational psychology. Meta-analytic studies from 1990 and 1999 concluded that team building has an insignificant effect on team performance. A later meta-analytic study in 2009 concluded that team building has a considerable effect on performance. This research investigated the impact of team-building activities. How effective are team building interventions effective in improving work team outcomes? This research reviews the impact of several types of team building interventions: goal setting, interpersonal relationships, problem solving, and role clarification.
