Biography

In addition to his role as president of CMU, Neil MacKinnon, Ph.D., is an active researcher as a tenured professor in the Covenant HealthCare College of Medicine. He has maintained an active research program since 1999, with a focus on health policy, rural health, and workplace mental health and well-being. His h-index is 36 with 8588 citations according to Google Scholar, as of December 29, 2025.


• Over course of research career, he has been P.I./co-P.I./Center Director on 46 grants and a co-investigator/collaborator on 32 grants.
• His research outputs include 220+ journal articles/reports/book chapters, 160+ scientific posters, and 360+ presentations.
• He co-founded IMPART at Dalhousie University, which addresses pharmaceutical and health policy in conjunction with the Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness.
• He co-authored a national bestselling book on safely navigating the healthcare system with a primary care physician. "Take As Directed" ranked as high as the #1 health care book in Canada and the #1 Nova Scotian book.
• He co-authored a health policy brief on COVID-19 and rural/urban differences for the Ohio Department of Health that was used by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine in May 2020.
