Optimization of Images
Ensuring your images are the correct dimensions is the first step in providing optimal images for your website; but it’s also important to consider the file size of each image. Since each image is a file that needs to be downloaded by the browser, the smaller those files are, the faster they will appear on the page (and thus the faster your page will load). This is especially important for mobile devices — and why JPGs are favored over PNGs.
Once your images are sized appropriately, taking one more step to optimize them for the web can significantly improve the user experience (and your Google search ranking). Sitefinity has a 1MB size limit for all images, but for best optimization, image sizes should be less than 500 KB.
There are many online and downloadable applications that can automatically optimize your photos without significantly affecting image quality. Here are a few that we recommend:
- ImageOptim (app for Mac)
- Kraken
- Compressor
- Optimizilla
