We’re excited to offer this program to our new incoming transfer students to help you earn your degree on your timeline. Earn credits and save money this summer with the Summer Extra Credit Program.
Process
- Meet with your academic advisor to select an appropriate course based on your academic program.
- Enroll in 6 credits during the summer sessions.
- Must not be on Satisfactory Academic Progress Suspension/Denial.
- No application is required to obtain the award.

How much money can I save?
You will save $552, and if you are Pell eligible, you may be able to save even more.
Can I change my mind and enroll in summer courses later?
Yes. CMU has courses that start at various times throughout the summer. The final group of classes begins June 29, 2026.
If I take a summer class at CMU before I start in the fall, will it reduce the number of credits I need to take during the regular academic year for my scholarhips?
No. Merit scholarship renewal requirements begin in the fall semester.
Will this award reduce my eligibility for other resources during the school year, like federal work-study?
Financial aid eligibility for the summer 2026 session is separate from the 2026-2027 fall/spring financial aid. However, the award may affect your eligibility for summer 2026 federal work-study.
Can I register for courses now?
You must be admitted and meet with an academic advisor to plan and register for summer courses.
Who is eligible to take summer courses?
Is this award available to new incoming first year students, graduate students, guest students, dual-enrolled students, or non-degree-seeking students?
No. Students must be a continuing or new transfer degree-seeking undergraduate student to be eligible.
I am a new transfer undergraduate in a CMU Online program. Am I eligible?
Yes, as long as you are a new transfer student enrolled in at least 6 credits over the summer sessions.
I am a new international undergraduate transfer student. Am I eligible?
Yes, as long as you are enrolled in at least 6 CMU credit hours over the summer sessions.
Are students using a CMU Employee or other tuition benefit eligible (e.g., employer reimbursement, etc.)?
Summer Extra Credit is not tuition-specific. However, if a student receives other financial assistance with specific eligibility or usage restrictions, those requirements will still apply. In all cases, a student's total financial aid cannot exceed their Cost of Attendance (COA).
What happens after registering for a summer course?
What if I drop a course and fall below 6 credits?
If you drop a course and your enrollment falls below the required minimum of 6 credits, then the full award will be removed from your student account.
What happens if my summer 2026 class is cancelled?
If CMU cancels a course, reach out to your academic advisor to explore alternative options based on your academic program. If no replacement is found and your enrollment drops below 6 credits, the award will be removed from the student account, and payments received (if applicable) will be refunded to the student.
What happens if I take summer courses but do not enroll this fall?
There is no requirement to attend CMU in the fall semester.
How will I finance my summer course(s)?
If I enroll, is my tuition due now or in the fall?
- Tuition for courses enrolled by May 2 will be due by June 1 before 5:00 pm.
- Tuition for courses enrolled between May 3 and June 1 will be due by July 1 before 5:00 pm.
- Tuition for courses enrolled after June 1 will be due by August 1 before 5:00 pm.
Can I use financial aid if I start in the summer?
Maybe, but you must file the 2025-2026 FAFSA by June 30 to be considered for summer federal aid. If you are interested, please speak to a financial aid advisor.
Will my 2026-2027 scholarships apply to summer tuition?
No. Financial aid offers for the 2026-2027 academic year are available starting in the fall of 2026.
When will summer financial aid disbursements begin?
The first summer aid disbursement is expected on May 16. However, if your classes do not start until June 29, your aid will not disburse until about 10 days before your classes start.
