Staal, Heather
Biography
Heather M. Staal, PhD, PT, MS, NCS is an Assistant Professor in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at Central Michigan University. With more than 24 years of clinical experience in neurologic rehabilitation, across diverse clinical setting, she specializes in the treatment of individuals with stroke, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, vestibular disorders, and balance impairments. She continues to practice in the outpatient neurologic rehabilitation setting, bringing current clinical expertise into physical therapy education.
Dr. Staal earned both her Bachelor's of Science in Health Science and her Master's of Science in Physical Therapy from Grand Valley State University and her PhD in Interdisciplinary Health Sciences from Western Michigan University. Her research focuses on improving balance and mobility in individuals with neurologic conditions, with current work examining the relationship of high-intensity gait training variables and personal factors with walking and balance outcomes in the stroke population.
An APTA board-certified Neurologic Clinical Specialist (NCS) and LSVT BIG® certified clinician, Dr. Staal's education interests include neurologic rehabilitation, clinical decision-making, and simulation-based learning. She is committed to preparing future physical therapists to deliver evidence-based, patient-centered care that optimizes function and quality of life.
