Biography

James A. Pytko is a Lecturer specializing in Geographic Information Science, Physical Geography, and Environmental Justice. With his original studies being in Theater Arts and Movement Studies at Drew University, he holds a B.S. in Geography with a GIS concentration and a B.S. in Biology with a Conservation of Natural Resources concentration from Central Michigan University. While there, he received a research grant for his work on habitat prediction mapping for the northern orchid Calapogon tuberosus. He also holds an M.S. in Geographic Information Science from Central Michigan University where his research studied the accessibility of family planning services in northern Michigan. His research has been presented at the Association of American Geographers national conference, and his academic background includes study at the Columbia University Earth Institute and training through the Colorado Outward Bound School Wilderness Leadership Program.

James enjoys sharing academic ideas to a variety of audiences. A certified Michigan Master Gardener, Pytko has taught the tropical plants section of the certification program in Roscommon County. His teaching and research interests include biogeography, spatial analysis, cartographic design, and environmental history. He teaches courses in physical geography, GIScience, environmental studies, and environmental justice, and serves both as a senator on the Academic Senate and as the upcoming GIS Student Success Coordinator.
