Biotechnology: Microscopy
Major
Biotechnology: microscopy overview
Microscopy gives you the tools to study life at its most detailed. In this concentration within CMU's biotechnology major—a field that combines biology, chemistry and technology to solve problems and create products—you'll learn to use high-powered imaging equipment to study cells, tissues and molecules. You'll build skills in lab work, research and analysis starting in your first year.
Your work will prepare you for careers in biotechnology, healthcare, forensics and research, or to continue your education in graduate or professional school.
AT A GLANCE
Choosing our biotechnology: microscopy program
Our biotechnology major teaches you how to work with advanced imaging techniques to answer biological questions. You'll learn how to:
- Prepare samples and collect high-resolution images.
- Use tools like confocal, scanning and transmission microscopes.
- Analyze biological structures and explain what your findings mean.
- Communicate research clearly and responsibly.
- Collaborate the solve real-world problems.
You'll complete an independent research project with support from faculty. Many students go on to present their work at academic conferences or collaborate with external partners. Throughout, you'll be part of a program that values close mentorship, clear thinking and technical skill.
Biotechnology program highlights
As a student in the biotechnology program, you'll:
- Graduate ready for a job: A core focus of this program is career preparation; you will receive mentorship and guidance on your resume and interview and communication skills.
- Fine-tune your research skills: Work with our award-winning faculty members in high-tech laboratories right on campus.
- Intern in your field: Biotechnology majors are assisted in finding an internship in their field, giving them hands-on work experience.
- Interact with industry leaders: You'll have access to the members of our Biotechnology Advisory Board who helped create the biotechnology program.
Biotechnology careers
Our program prepares you for work in lab-based roles and research environments. You'll graduate with the skills employers are looking for and the kind of experience that makes you a strong candidate for advanced study.
