Environmental justice certificate overview

Build a healthier, more equitable world with an environmental justice certificate. 

You’ll learn how social factors such as race, gender and poverty affect a community's environment. Then, you'll build the skills to promote equity and sustainability in public and private sectors.

This certificate pairs well with majors in geography, administration and political science. Environmental studies majors can count up to 12 credits toward both their major and this certificate.

What is environmental justice?

Environmental justice affirms everyone's right to live in a safe, healthy environment with access to clean air, safe water and basic resources. It explores how race, gender and economic factors influence environmental policies and impact communities. 

You'll study topics like:

  • Climate change and resource management. 
  • Environmental politics. 
  • Economics and its impact on the environment. 
  • Intersections between environment, race and gender.

You'll be ready to help famers use conservation practices, lead public awareness campaigns and help cities improve transportation.  

Highlights of the environmental justice certificate

As a part of this certificate program, you'll:

  • Earn a credentials alongside your degree: Complete just five courses to earn your certificate. Some of your credits may even count toward an environmental studies degree
  • Collaborate and network: Work on projects with sustainability-minded peers. You'll learn how to work with together to solve real-world challenges. 
  • Find a community: Join student-led sustainability groups like Campus Grows, the CMU Sierra Club and Central Sustainability

Create a more sustainable campus 

Find a community and make an impact with Central Sustainability. The student-run office sponsors educational events, provides volunteer opportunities and advocates for sustainable policies. Their efforts even earned a Silver Rating in the 2024 STARS report
