A degree in education with a major in Teaching Grades PK through 6 will help you understand students' needs and create an engaging, supportive classroom where everyone can thrive. You will learn how to use research to not only improve your teaching, but to also help every student succeed within your classroom. This learner-centered major prepares you to teach literacy, math, science and social studies to students in preschool through grade six.

What will I do with a degree in education at CMU?
You can select a combined major that will allow you to teach all grades in most elementary schools. The teaching PK-6 degree in education is designed to prepare you to teach preschool through sixth grade. The purpose of The Teaching Grades PK-6 major is to prepare you to address the needs of the whole child; use relevant research to establish a supportive, engaging environment that fosters learning; and use practices that meet the needs of all learners.
Our Teaching Grades PK-6 major in education offers:
- Dual certification bands: Combines both PK-3 and 3-6 certification.
- Comprehensive coursework: Focuses on early childhood development, reaching diverse learners, classroom management, teaching in an inclusive setting, reading diagnostics, teaching multi-lingual learners and numeracy.
- Core teaching practices: A set of highly effective core teaching practices used to increase student learning.
- Integrated field experiences: Involves working with teaching artifacts (videos of teaching, student work and lesson plans) and actual classroom-based activities.
- Global opportunities: Includes opportunities for study away and study abroad.

Clinical experiences represent the heart of our education preparation program and provide a wide array of opportunities for you and other education professionals to refine, polish and strengthen practice.
The Literacy Center at CMU represents a dynamic partnership between Central Michigan University and the surrounding central Michigan region. Support area students and their families by providing instructional services in reading and writing and providing undergraduate teacher candidates and graduate students the opportunity to acquire and hone their skills and knowledge in literacy diagnosis and remediation.
Global experiences take students to locations such as Westport Ireland, the Dominican Republic and more. Students ready to student teach and those early in their teacher education program will explore new teaching environments with a diverse classroom and unique learning opportunities.
Scholarships are available each academic year through the Department of Teacher and Special Education to teacher education students.
STEM Education is CMU's Center for Excellence in STEM Education (CESE) that positively impacts mathematics, science and engineering educators at all levels in Michigan and beyond through innovative partnerships, programs and professional development opportunities.
2 + CMU Partnership Program for Teacher Education is an off-campus program that offers an opportunity to earn PK-6 teacher certification in an area close to home. Students work with one of our partnering community colleges to complete a 2 + CMU transfer guide and then transfer to CMU to complete the B.S. in Education through CMU Online.
