Affirmative Action Statements

The university's official statement is:

"CMU, an AA/EO institution, strongly and actively strives to increase diversity and provide equal opportunity within its community. CMU does not discriminate against persons based on age, color, disability, ethnicity, familial status, gender, gender expression, gender identity, genetic information, height, marital status, national origin, political persuasion, pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions, race, religion, sex, sex-based stereotypes, sexual orientation, transgender status, veteran status, or weight."

This statement reflects the values and beliefs of Central Michigan University and is required on:

  • Faculty and staff job postings.
  • Publications and promotional materials that reach external audiences (those beyond current employees and students).
  • Admissions recruitment materials.

The Office of Civil Rights and Institutional Equity is charged with monitoring and approving the use of this statement on all job-related advertisements. University Communications, in consultation with the Office of Civil Rights and Institutional Equity, monitors and oversees the use of appropriate statements on all other advertisements, publications and communications.

In rare cases where space is limited, University Communications may approve use of the following shortened statement:

"CMU, an AA/EO institution, strongly and actively strives to increase diversity and provide equal opportunity for all individuals, irrespective of gender identity or sexual orientation and including but not limited to minorities, females, veterans and individuals with disabilities."
