Smith Hall Demolition

  • Scope:
    • Originally constructed in 1934, Smith Hall is an approximately 20,000 s.f. facility identified in the Campus Master Plan for demolition as part of CMU’s long-term campus optimization strategy.  The removal of the building will eliminate approximately $2.8 million in deferred maintenance liability, allowing the university to redirect resources toward higher-priority facilities and infrastructure investments.
    • The demolition supports CMU’s commitment to responsible stewardship of campus assets, reduces ongoing maintenance obligations, and creates opportunities for future improvements within the historic north campus district.  This project is part of a broader effort to align campus facilities with current and future university needs while enhancing the overall campus environment.
  • Board of Trustees Approval: June 2026
  • Budget: $2.0M
  • Status: Planning & Design
  • Estimated Completion: Fall 2027
