Naming Convention for Images

The second step in the working with images process: upload images to DAM

Naming conventions are very important to keep consistency for easy identification, auditing purposes and accessibility. Do not use spaces in your image titles. The recommended guidelines for images are below.

Image naming guidelines

  • Date: 20200315 (YYYYMMDD).
  • Add: location/topic/event  (mtpleasant/ICOHP/Graduation).
  • Add: subject of image (publib/smith_jane/museum).
  • Add: unique number (probably three digits is enough, but you might need more, depending on your collection - 001, 002, etc.).
  • Add: Image size 1800x720.
  • Your final image name should look something like this: “20200315_mtpleasant_publib_001_1800x720”
  • NOTE: Stock photos can be used on a temporary basis if University Communications photography is not available. In such cases, include the word "stock" at the beginning of the image file name before adding it to the DAM.

Examples

  • 20200815_MtPleasant_farmersmarket_001_1800x720
  • 20200817_Mackinac_bay_001_1800x720
  • 20200930_ICOHP_smith_jane_001_1800x720
  • stock_20210831_solar_eclipse_001_1800x720

Quick tips

  • The preferred image format is JPG. JPGs typically have a smaller size — and shorter load times — than PNGs.
  • File extensions will already be applied.
  • Graphical elements, like those used throughout the branding (think flat colors), must be SVG.
  • Do not use still GIFs. Animated GIFs are acceptable.
  • Ensure designed graphics do not obscure the main focus.
