Housing Selection for First-Year and Transfer Students

What is housing selection?
Incoming first-year and transfer students will select their housing assignment for fall 2022 beginning Tuesday, May 17. Like buying concert tickets, housing selection is first-come, first-serve. You will log back into your housing application to select your housing assignment based on the sign-up schedule outlined below.
Students selected to be part of a living learning community and student-athletes will be assigned by the Office of Residence Life and will receive their housing assignment via email on Friday, May 13.
When is housing selection?
Housing selection will take place on four different days over four weeks.
Tuesday, May 17 from 3 p.m. – midnight:
Kulhavi Halls (Towers Community) – first-year students only
Campbell and Kesseler (Towers Community) – transfer students
Thursday, May 19 from 3 p.m. – midnight:
Carey Hall and Wheeler Hall(Towers Community)
Tuesday, May 24 from 3 p.m. – midnight:
Thursday, May 26 from 3 p.m. – midnight:
Thursday, June 30 from 9 a.m. – midnight:
All remaining housing spaces
Housing selection process
1. Begin your housing application.
After being admitted and paying or deferring your enrollment reservation deposit, you'll be sent an email to your CMICH account containing our Residential Community Living Guide. Page four of the living guide provides the link to the housing application.
The housing application is an online process where you select a meal plan, find roommates and choose housing preferences. You will need your CMU global ID and password to access the secure application system. For assistance, contact CMU Help Desk at 989-774-3662.
2. Pay or postpone/defer your $350 first housing payment.
Requests to postpone/defer your first housing payment until Oct. 1, should be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org. Please include your name and student ID number.
To pay by electronic check or credit card, log into CentralLink using your global ID and password and select “Pay my bill.” Please allow 48 hours from the date of application for the first housing charge to appear on your account.

3. Select your roommate(s).
If you wish to search for roommates, the housing application has two ways to identify roommates.
This will list other students who have a 2022-2023 housing application and show the percentage match based on the lifestyle questionnaire you filled out in the housing application.
Roommate Search by Details:
This allows students to search for friends that they want to live with.
You may also identify potential roommates and meet other residents through the RoomSync app. Find your invitation to the RoomSync app on the roommate step of the housing application.
Once you have matched with your roommate(s), you will need to make your request official by creating a roommate group at housing.cmich.edu. Be sure to request and confirm your roommates in your roommate group. The roommate group leaders will select the housing assignment for the group. We encourage you to identify alternative plans with your roommate group in case you do not receive your first housing choice.
4. Mark your calendar for housing selection.
Review the housing sign-up schedule and mark your calendar for the specific day based on the location you wish to live.
Frequently asked questions about housing selection
What if I do not have a roommate request or roommate group?
If you don’t have preferred roommates, not to worry! Many students decide to select their housing based on where they want to live, and they will receive roommates looking for that same location. If you wish to search for roommates, the housing application has two ways to find roommates.
What happens if I do not get my first-choice housing unit?
Students may sign up on the Wishlist if they do not receive their housing of choice. The Wishlist will be open Monday, June 6 from 9 a.m. to Friday, June 17 at midnight. Students must have a housing assignment to sign up on the Wishlist and will be contacted by phone if we can accommodate their request. Submit your Wishlist request here.
