A message to the Class of 2020 from President Robert O. Davies
This is another special and personal message from me, to the graduating class of 2020 from Central Michigan University.
I know each of you were very disappointed by the postponement of our May commencement ceremonies. I was, too. That is why I am so excited to share a little good news with you today. I invite you and your fellow classmates and your family to join me on campus the weekend of August 15 for rescheduled ceremonies to celebrate your graduation. I am looking forward to congratulating you in person and - if we can do so safely - shaking hands or at least bumping some elbows.
I know the new date may not work for everyone, especially for those who are going on to jobs or continuing your education in other cities, states and even countries. If you aren't able to join us in person, you can join us virtually that day through the livestream.
Each of you have worked hard to get to this moment, and I am looking forward to celebrating your outstanding accomplishments very soon along with your family and friends.
Keep up the hard work, congratulations, and Fire Up Chips!

A message to the Class of 2020 from President Robert O.
This is a special and personal message from me to the Central Michigan University class of 2020.
As many of you may know, I look forward to commencement more than any other campus event. It's not just the joy of shaking hands with every student, its also the the excitement in the air as we celebrate the achievement of a major life milestone: your university degree.
Commencement is the culmination of your educational journey – the reward for the long hours of hard work you’ve put into your years at CMU.
You have looked forward to this moment for a long time, and so have I. That is why it is so painful to say that today I made the difficult decision to postpone CMU’s May 2020 commencement exercises.
I held off making this choice for as long as I reasonably could, holding on to hope that we’d have a change in circumstances. However, with the recent guidance from the CDC and in keeping with the directives of our Governor, I feel it is necessary to postpone our graduation events.
Please know that I share your deep disappointment. I know that you and your friends and your family have been anticipating this day for quite some time. You have every right to feel sad, frustrated and even angry — nothing about this feels fair.
As the university’s president, my top priority is to protect the health and safety of our community. As such, I could not in good conscience bring you and your families together with the continued threat of infection looming so large. I want you to know that you and your well-being matter more to me than anything else.
And I promise you that we will find a way to celebrate your accomplishments together. I am working with leaders across campus to develop alternate plans, and while not ideal, we are considering ceremonies in August and we will share updates with you soon.
For now, know this: I am extremely proud of you. Until we are able to celebrate, I ask you this favor:
Grab your cell phone and take a selfie or record a short video. Tell me what degree you are earning and how you will celebrate this achievement, of course, as you practice safe social distancing. Tell me who helped you along the way. Tell me how proud you are to be a CMU graduate and tell me what you'll be doing next.
And then share it to your social media channels and tag me, @cmichprez and I'll be sure to respond. Show me that, in spite of these challenging times, you are taking a moment to reflect on your success and celebrate this remarkable achievement.
I look forward to celebrating with you soon, and until then, graduates - FIRE UP CHIPS!
