What you'll learn as an mechanical engineering technology major

In the mechanical engineering technology degree program — accredited by ABET — you will:

  • Study design and manufacturing processes, tools and modeling.
  • Learn industry-specific codes and standards.
  • Take classes in robotics, thermodynamics, circuits and energy analysis.
  • Complete hands-on training in working with metals and polymers.
  • Learn technical communication skills used in presentation of engineering proposals, reports and specifications.
  • Collaborate with faculty using cutting-edge technology — from 3-D printers to alternative energies.

All so you can obtain the knowledge and practical experience for an exciting career in design, installation, manufacturing, testing, evaluation, technical sales or maintenance of mechanical systems.

Accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET, https://www.abet.org, under the General Criteria and the Program Criteria for Mechanical Engineering Technology and Similarly Named Programs.

Why study mechanical engineering technology at CMU?

As a mechanical engineering technology degree student at CMU, you will be able to:

  • Complete a design capstone project in your senior year.
    • Some examples of past capstone projects are motorized target systems for the university police, wind turbine design, design and improvement of systems for automotive and manufacturing industries and more.
  • Build race cars with CMU's Society of Automotive Engineers Baja Team or the Formula 1 team.
  • Collaborate with faculty on their research interests like applied electronics, infrastructure, machine design and more.
  • Find support through academic advising and success coaching with the College of Science and Engineering-specific student support services.

Careers with a mechanical engineering technology degree

Graduates with a mechanical engineering technology degree work in engineering design, testing, production, or research and development operations — often in industrial, aerospace and government organizations.

Career Projected Salary
Mechanical Engineering Technologists and Technicians $64,530

Fast cars, better career skills

Earn-real world manufacturing skills in the realm of engineering and technology and hone your business, logistics and production skills with CMU's two Team Chippewa Performance racing teams; Baja SAE and Formula SAE.

Students on the Baja SAE team design and build a single-seat, all-terrain, sporting vehicle while Formula SAE focuses on developing a miniature style Formula 1 race car.

Both teams test their skills competing against other college and universities, judged by industry professionals.
